Why humans are so sociable these days

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Humans have evolved to become the most flexible of the primates and being able to live in lots of different social settings sets us apart from non-human primates, suggests research by University of Oxford and the University of Auckland.

A research paper, published in the journal Nature, has provided important new clues to how humans network and socialise today by exploring the evolutionary history of social groupings among primates. The study analysed patterns of social groups among living primates, as well as examining the 'the root' of the family tree, in 217 primate species. The researchers then used Bayesian data modelling to reconstruct the most likely explanation for how the grouping behaviour of primates evolved over 74 million years.

Their key finding is that the main step change in social behaviour occurred when primates switched from being mainly active at night to being more active during the day. Primates started out as solitary foragers as by night they could survive by moving quietly on their own in the dark. However, once they switched to daytime activity, they could be seen and were more vulnerable to attack by predators unless they could show strength in numbers. This research paper provides evidence to show that this switch in activity coincided with a significant change in social behaviour as primates started to 'gang up' for the first time. The researchers conclude that social bonding began as a way of adapting to a new threat.

The paper also suggests that primates went directly from being solitary foragers into large, mixed-sex groups where group members were loosely bound together. Members could come and go as needed, suggests the research, which is a behaviour still observed in some primates, like lemurs, today. The emergence of more stable groups of primates, in which individuals formed clusters that were smaller in size and maintained close social links, is likely to have developed much later says the paper.

These findings are significant as they throw into doubt previous theories about the evolution of primate social grouping patterns. Previous studies have suggested that complex primate social groups were composed of smaller units that stacked up rather like building blocks. Others have suggested that the bond between a mother and daughter later extended to include other related females, and it was this network of relationships that underpinned the social grouping patterns of mammals.

The data, studied by the research team, included a huge range of social grouping patterns: solitary individuals, family- bonds, pair-bonds, harems, multi-male and multi-female groups. The researchers discovered that the bonding behaviour of primates was strongly determined by their ancestors, with closely related species having very similar social behaviour.

Once the transition from individual to group living took place -- 52 million years ago in the ancestral line that gave rise to humans, and later in another branch of the primate family tree -- no shift back to solitary behaviour ever occurred. Primate ancestors that subsequently began living in pairs did not switch back to group living, whereas those that began living in harems could transition back and forth with large groups. There was never a transition directly from pair to harem living or vice versa.

The researchers conclude that only humans have had the flexibility to live in a range of different, complicated social settings. Throughout history, humans have lived in monogamous and polygamous societies; in nuclear family and extended family groups. Beyond the home, they have socialised in different work settings, as well as being part of the complicated social structure of wider human society.

Lead author Dr Susanne Shultz, from the Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Oxford, said: 'There is an amazing flexibility in the way humans have managed to socialise, network and live together, both in groups and wider society. We have a huge variety of social settings to cope with, according to the different cultural practices and customs. This flexibility in the human lineage has not evolved to anything like this level in other primates. Our findings support previous studies that suggest that more brain power is needed for groups that have a more complicated social life.

'Co-author Kit Opie, also from the Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology, said: 'These analyses allow us to look back in time to understand major step changes in social evolution amongst our closest relatives. We now understand why primate sociality is inherently special, as bonded social groups are unusual in mammals, yet the norm in primates.'

Romney criticized for remark about Medicaid (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Mitt Romney opened himself up to criticism Friday by saying he didn't understand Medicaid until he started working in government. The Republican presidential candidate later tried to clarify the comment, but Democrats had already pounced, saying his words were further proof that the multimillionaire businessman is out of touch.

"You wonder what Medicaid is, those that aren't into all this government stuff. You know, I have to admit. I didn't know all the differences between these things before I got into government," Romney told voters at a campaign event. "Then I got into it and understood that Medicaid is the health care program for the poor, by and large."

Medicaid is a federal-state health care program for the poor and disabled.

Romney tried later to clarify what he meant, telling reporters traveling with him to South Carolina that he understood the program but didn't quite grasp how it was funded. He called his earlier comment a "self-deprecating understatement."

Democrats said the comment showed Romney doesn't understand working-class people.

"One has to wonder how Mitt Romney thinks he can represent American workers, their families and seniors when his concern for the poor and the middle class comes across like an afterthought," Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

Romney, who was in his late 40s when he ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 1994, told reporters that his prior work for a health care consulting company taught him how important Medicaid and Medicare, a health care program for seniors, are to hospitals.

Store pulls ads from Muslim show, sparks protest

ALLEN PARK, Michigan (AP) ? About 100 people are at a Lowe's store in Michigan protesting the home improvement chain's decision to pull ads from a reality TV show about U.S. Muslims.

The protesters in Allen Park showed up in response to a call from a coalition of Christian, Muslim and civil rights groups and are chanting "God Bless America and shame on Lowe's." Protesters say they want people to boycott the chain.

But 15 to 20 counter-protesters also showed up Saturday morning, saying they came to support Lowe's.

Executives of the Mooresville, North Carolina-based company say TLC's "All-American Muslim" became a "lightning rod" for complaints. They acted after complaints from the conservative Christian group the Florida Family Association.

Lowe's spokeswoman Karen Cobb says the company respects everyone's right to express their opinion peacefully.

Justice Dept.: Seattle police used excessive force

Seattle police have engaged in excessive force that violated federal law and the Constitution, the U.S. Justice Department said Friday.

    6. Who came out on top in GOP debate?

An investigation was launched last spring following the fatal shooting of a homeless, Native American woodcarver and other reported use of force used against minority suspects. The investigation was aimed at determining whether Seattle police have a "pattern or practice" of violating civil rights or discriminatory policing, and if so, what they should do to improve.

"Our findings should serve as a foundation to reform the police department and to help restore the community's confidence in fair, just and effective law enforcement. The problems within SPD have been present for many years and will take time to fix," said Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the civil rights division.

Federal investigators said they found inadequate systems of supervision and oversight, and that officers too quickly resorted to the use of weapons like batons and flashlights. And Seattle officers escalated situations and used unnecessary force when arresting people for minor offenses, according to the Justice Department.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Washington and 34 other community groups called for the inquiry after a Seattle officer shot and killed the woodcarver, John T. Williams, in 2010.

Video from Officer Ian Birk's patrol car showed Williams crossing the street holding a piece of wood and a small knife, and Birk exiting the vehicle to pursue him. Off camera, Birk quickly shouted three times for Williams to drop the knife, then fired five shots. The knife was found folded at the scene, but Birk later maintained Williams had threatened him.

Birk resigned from the force but was not charged. A review board found the shooting unjustified.

Other incidents captured on surveillance or police-cruiser video include officers using an anti-Mexican epithet and stomping on a prone Latino man who was mistakenly thought to be a robbery suspect; an officer kicking a non-resisting black youth in a convenience store; and officers tackling and kicking a black man who showed up in a police evidence room to pick up belongings after he was mistakenly released from jail.

There was no finding that the Seattle Police Department engaged in discriminatory policing, but federal investigators believe this area needs more research.

"The solution to the problems identified within the Seattle Police Department will require strong and consistent leadership along the chain of command, effective training and policies, and vigilant oversight," said Jenny A. Durkan, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, who joined Perez for Friday's announcement.

City Councilman Tim Burgess, head of the Public Safety Committee and a former police officer, said in a statement the findings "confirm what many, including myself, have believed for some time ? our police department can do better."

Burgess said the probe raises concerns about department management.

"Over the past 20 years or so, we have gone through repeated evaluations of police accountability," he said. "Yet, every few years, the same issues resurface."

He said he expected Chief John Diaz to work to fix the problem.

Sgt. Rich O'Neill, the police union president, said in a statement he hoped federal investigators would let the department study the data that led to the critical report.

"Officers are often put in very difficult and dangerous situations and all they want are clear and specific ground rules to guide them when making use of force decisions," he said.

Taylor's "National Velvet" script sells for $170,500 (omg!)

Christie's auctioneer Andrea Fiuczynski conducts an auction of Elizabeth Taylor's jewelry, clothing, art and memorabilia, near an image of the late actress at Christie's auction house in New York, December 14, 2011. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri

(Reuters) - Elizabeth Taylor's script for the movie "National Velvet" -- which made her a star at age 12 -- sold for more than 50 times its estimate on Friday as the New York auction of the actress's jewels, clothes, art and memorabilia neared its close.

Christie's auctioneers said the 1944 "National Velvet" script, bound in lilac leather, was sold to a private U.S. buyer for $170,500 on Friday. It's pre-sale estimate was $2,000 - $3,000.

A drawing of lips inscribed to Taylor by Andy Warhol sold for $242,500, and was among the priciest items bought on the fourth day of the auction.

Friday's total sales were $4.4 million, including commission, taking the auction sales so far this week to $154.2 million. An online-only sale of some 1,000 lower-priced items from Taylor's estate continues through Saturday.

Christie's chairman Marc Porter said the response to the auction so far had been "nothing short of overwhelming with multiple bidders competing for every lot."

Taylor, regarded as one of the last great Hollywood legends, died of congestive heart failure in March at age 79.

Her fabled collection of ruby, diamond and emerald jewelry -- many of them gifts from two-time husband Richard Burton -- attracted the biggest interest, selling for a total of $116 million earlier this week.

Smear Test to Help Doctors Detect Cancer at Early Stage | TopNews ...

A recent Lancet Oncology study has revealed that cancer can be diagnosed at early stage through smear tests, which would help in preventing deaths occurring from cancer. For the study, the researchers took samples from Dutch women.

During the study, the researchers also looked for human papillomavirus (HPV) and through smear tests; the doctors were able to pinpoint the signs of early stage of cancer. Following the findings of the study, the researchers are now asking to include the tests for women so that women vulnerable to cervical cancer could be diagnosed at earliest.

In UK, women in the age group of 25 to 65 are called for smear test after every three years. For the smear test, a sample of cells is taken from the neck of the womb. The sample thus taken is closely monitored under microscope. Through the observation, one can actually point out early signs of cancer.

In UK, teenage girls have already been vaccinated against HPV. But still, there are many women who might be leaving under the threat of HPV. If the smear tests are introduced for women then women with early sign of cervical cancer can be diagnosed.

The medical experts are of the view that the smear tests can be used for detecting various types of cancers which are often missed by screening. However, before the smear tests are made available for HPV testing, it?s is necessary to ?answer some outstanding questions about how HPV screening could work in the real world, including how best to manage women who receive a positive HPV test result, and what to do for younger women?, says Jessica Harris from Cancer Research UK. Professor Julietta Patnick, the Director of the NHS Cancer Screening Programme has recommended that further studies should be conducted on smear tests.

Carlos the Jackal sentenced to life, again

(AP) ? Carlos the Jackal, the flamboyant Venezuelan who symbolized Cold War terrorism, was sentenced to life in prison ? again ? in a Paris trial that ended late Thursday with him rallying for revolution and weeping for Moammar Gadhafi.

Carlos, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, hasn't seen freedom since French agents spirited him out of Sudan in a sack in 1994. He's already serving a life sentence in a French prison for a triple murder in 1975, the worst punishment meted out in a country that does not have the death penalty.

Once one of world's most-wanted men, the former gun-for-hire and self-proclaimed revolutionary was escorted out of his cell and back to court last month to face charges that he instigated four bombings in France in 1982 and 1983 that killed 11 people and injured more than 140 others.

Just before midnight Thursday, the court found Ramirez guilty in all four attacks, and sentenced him to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 18 years.

Combative and defiant throughout the six-week trial, the 62-year-old Ramirez denied any role in the attacks.

His lawyer and romantic partner, Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, told The Associated Press that he will appeal. She said Ramirez was the victim of a politicized process and criticized investigators for using archives of former communist bloc countries to help in the prosecution.

Lawyers for the victims welcomed the long-awaited verdict, nearly three decades after the bloody bombings.

Ramirez sowed fear across Western European and Middle Eastern capitals during the Cold War, with believed ties to hijackings and killings for far-left and Palestinian terror groups. Ramirez, relishing the rare public attention at the Paris trial, used the defendants' stand as a pulpit and spoke for five hours Thursday in his final testimony.

"I am a living archive. Most of the people of my level are dead," he said, reading from a spiral notebook in a speech that at times rambled far from the cases at hand. Three hours into it, he said, "Excuse me, I am taking my time, it's a small recapitulation."

In an emotional finale, he read a text in memory of longtime Libyan leader Gadhafi, a sort of ideological brother who funded anti-Western attacks in his own heyday. Gadhafi was killed in October after rebels backed by NATO airstrikes pushed him from power.

"This man did more than all the revolutionaries," Carlos said, sobs choking his voice as he ended the monologue with, "Long live the revolution!" A crowd of young men in the gallery cheered in support.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he sought to ensure that Ramirez's rights were respected during his trial in France. Chavez has previously praised Ramirez as a "revolutionary fighter" and has said he doesn't view him as a terrorist. There was no immediate response to the verdict by the Venezuelan government on Thursday.

The trial concerned an attack in March 1982 on a Paris-Toulouse train, an April 1982 attack on the Paris offices of an Arabic-language newspaper, and two attacks on New Year's Eve 1983, one on a high-speed TGV train and another on a train station in Marseille.

Investigators said the first two attacks were aimed at getting French authorities to free Ramirez' then-girlfriend Magdalena Kopp ? with whom he later married and had a daughter ? and comrade-in-arms Bruno Breguet.

During a career in international terrorism lasting two decades, Ramirez is believed to have "freelanced" for Germany's Baader-Meinhof, the Turkish Popular Liberation Front, the Japanese Red Army, the Basque separatist group ETA and Italy's Red Brigades. He was the chief suspect in the 1975 hostage-taking of OPEC oil ministers that left three people dead.

Safe havens grew scarce and allies turned dubious for Ramirez once the world was upended by the fall of communism starting in 1989. French secret agents snatched him from his refuge in Khartoum, Sudan in 1994, and a French court convicted him in 1997 of the 1975 murders of two French secret agents and an alleged informer.

In this year's Paris trial, three others were prosecuted in absentia. The court convicted two of his accomplices, Palestinian Kamal Al-Issawi and German Johannes Weinrich, giving them life sentences, and acquitted a third, Christa Margot Frohlich.

Weinrich, said to head Ramirez' European operations and a former member of Germany's violent far-left Red Army Faction, is behind bars in Germany, Frohlich remains at large, and Al-Issawi's whereabouts are unknown to French authorities.

Ramirez's younger brother Vladimir condemned the verdict, accusing French authorities of repeatedly violating his brother's rights.

"In the trial it was shown overwhelmingly... that the French government didn't have proof against Ilich, that really there were many deficiencies, a great deal lacking in the case brought by prosecutors," told The Associated Press in a phone interview in Venezuela.

He also condemned French authorities for capturing his brother in Sudan in 1994.

Vladimir Ramirez has repeatedly led protests in Venezuela demanding his older brother's repatriation to his homeland.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? Although James Harrison's devastating, illegal hit on Colt McCoy was witnessed by millions on television and thousands at Heinz Field, Cleveland's medical staff did not realize the severity of the blow when it treated the quarterback.

That was the explanation given by Browns President Mike Holmgren on Wednesday, one day after NFL medical officials and representatives of the Players Association met with the Browns to discuss the team's controversial handling of McCoy's head injury and possible changes to the league's policies on concussions.

Holmgren does not expect the league to penalize the Browns, who did not know McCoy had a concussion when they sent him back into Thursday night's game.

Union chief DeMaurice Smith said the meetings allowed the NFLPA to learn more about McCoy's treatment.

"We will review the findings with our team and take into consideration the public comments made by the Browns," Smith said in a statement.

During a nearly one-hour news conference, Holmgren explained that McCoy was not checked for a concussion on the sideline after the hit because he wasn't showing symptoms. Also, the team's medical and training staffs were unaware of the impact of Harrison's helmet-to-face mask hit because they were on the sideline working on other injured players.

McCoy was evaluated by medical personnel and trainer Joe Sheehan, who told Browns coach Pat Shurmur the QB was "good to go."

Holmgren defended the decision but acknowledged the injury may have been handled differently if the medical staff had seen McCoy get laid out by Harrison, who has been suspended one game by the league for his fifth illegal tackle on a quarterback in three years.

"I want to make something very, very clear here," said Holmgren, who was at times emotional when discussing the topic and several others. "No coach that I know, certainly not our head coach, would ever overrule a doctor and put a kid in a game where a doctor said you can't play. I never did it. Pat will never do it. It's not happening.

"If anybody had that in the back of their mind because it's a big game, it's the Steelers, we had a chance to win the game, we're going to roll the dice a little bit and throw him in, that's not what happened.

"That will never happen."

Holmgren said one of the issues raised at the meeting was having the league observer at games ? or someone ? notify the field if there's a big hit and a player should be evaluated more thoroughly.

Holmgren called the Browns' medical staff "the absolute best in football" and praised the club's handling of head injuries. Earlier in Thursday night's game, tight end Benjamin Watson and fullback Owen Marecic were both ruled out by the staff with concussions. The Browns have had nine concussions this season.

McCoy was sent home before practice on Wednesday with a headache and it's doubtful he will play this Sunday when the Browns visit Arizona. Holmgren has not yet spoken to the second-year quarterback, who was scrambling from pressure and had flipped the ball to running back Montario Hardesty when Harrison drilled him in the chin.

In giving a detailed breakdown "to set the record as straight as I can," Holmgren explained that when McCoy was hit, Sheehan and Dr. Mark Schickendantz ran on the field not knowing exactly what had happened.

"They were all working on other injured players, either in the bench area or behind players, so they did not see the play," Holmgren said. "Then, they heard a crowd reaction. Someone said, 'Colt's down.'"

Holmgren said McCoy was "lucid and talking" when he was being treated and did not show any signs of having a concussion. Holmgren said Schickendantz "was looking at his face and his eyes, Joe was looking at the rest of him and he was complaining of his hand." McCoy sustained a badly bruised hand.

Holmgren said McCoy was not unconscious and responded to everything the medical staff asked him to do. When McCoy got to the sideline, Holmgren said Dr. Tom Waters joined the others to check on McCoy, who also answered questions to satisfaction.

At that point, Holmgren said McCoy was not showing any concussion symptoms so the standardized SCAT2 (Sport Concussion Assessment Tool) was not given.

"Their reaction to the way Colt was acting did not dictate that," he said. "They had not seen the play and he was talking, answering, knew how much time was left. So his response, following our normal protocol, did not dictate they administer the test."

McCoy returned to the game after missing just two plays and threw a costly interception in the end zone. Pittsburgh scored moments later and won 14-3. It was only after McCoy, who was in for 18 plays after he sustained the concussion, had showered and was preparing for postgame interviews when he told doctors that he was feeling "funky."

McCoy said a loud noise in the locker room startled him, and that's when the Browns began testing and treating him for a concussion. McCoy asked for the TV lights to be dimmed before doing interviews and he was allowed to fly back to Cleveland with the team.

Holmgren said Shurmur should not be blamed for putting McCoy back in.

"I'm not going to second guess Pat on that," he said. "Pat's in the front lines. He's got to make that decision. I've been there before with every quarterback I've ever coached. Pat made a judgment there and I think Colt probably displayed to him what he displayed to the doctors. He's the coach. He's got to make that call."

Holmgren described the meetings with the league's medical personnel as "healthy." McCoy did not take part in the discussions. Holmgren expects "some tweaks" to the league's procedures on concussions.

"Anytime you have a situation like this it's pretty visible," he said. "It allows every opinion known to man to pile in. Then you've gotta be careful and do the right stuff. That's why I said we want to be very involved with the league, with the union and deciding what that is. I would fully expect more conversations and more meetings to take place in the future in trying to make this as safe as we can for the players."

Browns offensive tackle Tony Pashos, the team's union representative, said McCoy's injury revealed aspects of concussions and their treatment that haven't been previously discussed.

"We got so caught up in the offseason on the union side as well as the NFL side of things with the lockout that we didn't get as in depth with some of these procedural things," he said. "We are the NFL. We have some of the best resources on the planet. The more we dive into this thing and get more knowledge and research we'll change things."
