FILE - In this Friday, July 1, 2011 file photo, Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari, followed by his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, exits after his meeting with Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron at his official residence at 10 Downing street Street in central London. Pakistan's military warned Wednesday of "grievous consequences" for the country after the prime minister accused the army chief of violating the constitution, adding to a sense of crisis that some believe could end in the ouster of government. Tensions between the army and the government of President Asif Ali Zardari have soared since a scandal involving a memo sent to Washington asking for its help in reining in the army broke late last year. The memo outraged the army, and the Supreme Court ordered a probe to establish whether it had been sanctioned by Zardari, something that could lead to impeachment hearings. (AP) ? Pakistan's government fired the defense secretary Wednesday and the army warned of "grievous consequences" for the country, escalating a political and legal crisis that some believe could end in the dismissal of government.

Retired Lt. Gen. Naeem Khalid Lodhi, an army loyalist seen as a bridge between the generals and the civilian government, was dismissed for "gross misconduct and illegal action" and replaced with a bureaucrat close to Prime Minister Yousuf Reza Gilani, the government said in a statement.

The developments were sign of near-open conflict between the army and the in a nation that has seen repeated military coups in its six-decade history. Relations between President Asif Ali Zardari and the generals have never been good, but have soured dramatically in recent months over a memo sent to Washington asking for its help in reining in the power of the military.

Political instability has dogged the government since it took office in 2008 after a 10-year army dictatorship, and there have been frequent, wrong predictions of its demise since then. While unpopular, the government has a solid majority in parliament and its unclear whether the army or the Supreme Court have the stomach to unseat it midterm.

The current standoff has hampered the nuclear-armed country's ability to battle al-Qaida and Taliban militants and coincided with the near collapse of ties between Pakistan and the United States, a relationship seen as key to negotiating an end to the war in Afghanistan.

The memo, allegedly masterminded by Pakistan's then envoy to Washington, outraged the army, which portrayed it as a threat to national security. Acting under its pressure, the Supreme Court ordered a probe to establish whether it had been sanctioned by Zardari, something that could lead to impeachment hearings. As part of the investigation, army chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and the head of the main spy agency, Lt Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, submitted statements to the court in which they suggested the memo was part of a conspiracy against the army.

Prime Minister Yousuf Reza Gilani said in an interview to a Chinese newspaper that Kayani and Pasha had violated the constitution by doing this. The interview was also published by Pakistan's state-run news agency. An army statement denied the mens' actions were illegal, and said Gilani's allegations had "very serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country." It did not elaborate.

An aide to Gilani said Lodhi was fired because of his role in submitting Kayani and Pasha's statements to the court.

The Supreme Court is at the center of another affair that could also see the dismissal of the government. It has ordered the attorney general to open corruption proceedings against Zardari over a once shelved case, something the government is refusing to do. On Tuesday, judges warned they could dismiss Gilani unless he followed their order to pursue the case. It ordered the government to attend proceedings next week to explain its inaction.

"I think the lines have been drawn, now it depends on who fires the next shot," said Rasul Bakhsh Rais, professor of political science at Lahore University of Management Sciences. "It is a three dimensional war: the judiciary, the political executive and the armed forces."

Observers say political pressure is growing to topple the government before Senate elections scheduled for March, which are expected to give Zardari's party a majority in the upper house that would give him significant political power for the next six years. The country also is to hold general elections next year, although some are pushing for the vote to be held sooner.

Most independent analysts say the army has little appetite for a direct coup but is happy to allow the Supreme Court, believed to be hostile to Zardari, to end the current setup via "constitutional" means.

"We can't rule out those impulses. They are rooted in history, but right now the army have decided not to. Rather they will stay by the sidelines and watch the court," said Rais.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES vs. THE HOBBIT: Who Won the Twitter Buzz?

Once all three trailer were released the twitter buzz ignited for all three films. The London PR agency Way To Blue has tracked the online buzz. They have counted up the overall tweets for each movie, the tweets regarding the directors, and tweets involving key characters in each film.

The results are very surprising as the winner for overall twitter buzz last month goes to ... THE HOBBIT! According to Way to Blue The Dark Knight Rises was thumped by almost twice as many tweets for Peter Jackson's return to Middle-Earth. In fact the Next Batman film didn't even finish in the top spot for the other two categories: director tweets and character tweets.

The Hobbit is certainly one of the largest responses we have seen from a film property online in the social media era. Comparing the levels of buzz upon trailer launch The Hobbit has reached almost double the levels of noise on Twitter than The Dark Knight Rises. Clearly the core audience for the Tolkien franchise have waited a long time to replenish their large appetites but we are surprised by the differential in Twitter volume from The Dark Knight Rises (which is no slouch either!). Prometheus definitely lacks the overt franchise link in the way these other properties do and it has to work a lot harder given its tenuous reported association. It?s still a strong performance no matter.
The Alien connection to Prometheus was made by around 1 in 5 tweeters to make it the top theme of all the trailers. Interestingly, the Space Jockey teaser generated the least of all buzz ? it is a true fanboy observation, after all. Of the character buzz, Bane beats Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins. Relative to its overall buzz, thematically The Hobbit had fewer strong takeaways thematically.
Which director owns the franchise the most? Surprisingly for all the talk around Ridley Scott and Prometheus it is ?Peter Jackson?s ? The Hobbit? that comes out on tops, warranting perhaps a film title change or a stronger poster mention for the New Zealander. This franchise undoubtedly belongs to Peter Jackson and imagine whether the conversation would still have been this high for him even if Guillermo Del Toro was directing!

White Samsung Galaxy Nexus unveiled; sticks to black front

White smartphones seem to be creating a rage these days, with mobile phone buyers preferring to settle for this less-than-ordinary color option instead of the conformist black or silver device that we?re all too used to purchasing. Keeping up with tide of white smartphones, Samsung recently announced plans for a white Galaxy Nexus device, leaving the smartphone market mumbling and nodding in agreement. Here?s the first look at this pale Nexus version that certainly pleases the eye. With the insides packing the same you?d find in the previously released black (or gray) Galaxy Nexus, the phones exteriors will sport a black front with a white back and a silver camera module. The phone is expected to surface by the start of February with a price tag just like its darker counterpart.

Sprint's first 4G LTE cities will receive the network in first half of 2012

Sprint LTE

Sprint officially announced its 4G LTE network a few days ago.

As a refresher, the first few lucky cities that will receive Sprint's 4G LTE are:

  • Dallas
  • Atlanta
  • Houston
  • San Antonio

Sprint has announced that these four cities will receive 4G LTE beginning in the first half of 2012. Expect a rapid deployment after that.

If you'll notice from the picture, the Galaxy Nexus will be one of three devices to introduce the network. The other two are the just-announced LG Viper 4G LTE and the Sierra Wireless Tri-Network Hotspot.

This is great news for Sprint users. Full press release after the break.

HBT: Short careers and the Hall of Fame

After writing the Dale Murphy post an uncomfortable thought struck me: would it have been better for his Hall of Fame case if he had been hit by a bus in 1988 than for his career to have simply cratered like it did?

I know, I?m awful for thinking that. Trust me when I say this is just a thought experiment. Dale Murphy is by all accounts a wonderful father, husband and human being and he gave me great joy in the early years of my Braves fandom. I?m delighted that he was not, in fact, run over by a bus while crossing a street in Salt Lake City, Utah in January 1988. Because that would be dreadful.

But if it had happened, he would have shuffled off this mortal coil ? or at least out of baseball if the bus had inflicted merely debilitating as opposed to fatal injuries ? with a damn interesting baseball career.

Our last memory of him would have been putting up a monster year: .295/.417/.580, 44 homers, 105 RBI and 115 runs scored. All for an awful team, so by all rights he shouldn?t have had a decent pitch to hit all year. ?At the moment the bus hit him, he?d have a career line of .279/.362/.500 in 12 seasons, which for the era was fantastic: a 132 OPS+. ?Oh, and multiple MVP awards and gold gloves at a premium defensive position.

Clearly that would have landed him in the Hall of Fame, right? It had to! ?Because let?s look at another center fielder whose career was cut short after 12 seasons: ?.318/.360/.477, an OPS+ of 124, and multiple gold gloves. That center fielder was Kirby Puckett, and he was voted into the Hall of Fame with over 80% of the vote in his first year of eligibility.

The difference: Puckett left the game on top, having his eyesight ruined by a freakish onset of glaucoma, ending his career. Murphy, in contrast, had something just as freakish but not as conventionally tragic happen: his skills just somehow evaporated, and he spent another six years in the baseball wilderness, toiling for the Phillies and the Rockies, desperately trying to regain his elite form.

It?s a safe assumption that Puckett would have remained a Hall of Fame caliber player for several more years and would have finished with career stats that more than justified his induction. ?But it is an assumption. Dale Murphy is a rare example of a player who just lost it overnight, but he is proof that it could happen to anyone.

I don?t mean to make some sort of political point with this. I don?t think Puckett was unfairly inducted nor do I think Murphy is unfairly being held out. ?It?s just one of those strange and uncomfortable realizations about how we as human beings fill in gaps in a narrative. How we mentally honor or reward victims of a certain set of circumstances and give no benefit of the doubt to victims of a different set of circumstances. ?Of how we think better of going out on top, no matter how tragic it was that the man in question went out, than we do of someone working hard but ultimately failing to recapture what he once had.

Even for those of us who are really partial to the numbers, it?s never just about the numbers. And I?m not sure how to reconcile it all.
