Ricoh Aficio SP C242DN

At first glance, the Ricoh Aficio SP C242DN ($450 street) seems like it can do its job as a color laser printer well enough, but doesn't seem to offer anything to separate itself from the pack. Its speed and output quality are suitable for the small office or workgroup that it's meant for, but the speed is on the slow side for the price, and output quality is a touch below par overall. What should catch your eye, though, is a low claimed running cost that can translate to a bargain price for the total cost of ownership. That alone may be enough to put it on your short list.

Like the Dell 2150cdn ($399.99 direct, 4 stars) that's the Editors' Choice in this category, the SP C242DN is a little too big to comfortably share a desk with, but small enough so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding room for it. At 12.6 by 15.7 by 17.7 inches (HWD), it's a little shorter than the Dell printer, but it has a bigger footprint. As with the Dell printer too, it's heavy enough, at 52.5 pounds, that you may want some help moving it into place.

Other than the low running cost, the printer's best feature is its paper handling, with a 250-sheet tray, a duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page), and a one-sheet manual bypass tray, so you can feed an envelope or a different paper stock without having to swap out the paper in the tray.

This should be enough for most small offices and workgroups. If you have heavier duty print needs, however, or need a second type of paper available for printing?so you have both legal and letter size available, for example?you can also add an optional 500-sheet tray ($149 list) for a total 750-sheet capacity. Few small offices will need more than that. And note that although the 2150cdn matches the SP C242DN point for point in standard paper handling, the SP C242DN has the higher maximum capacity.

Setup and Speed
Setting up the SP C242DN is typical for this class of color laser. For my tests, I connected it to a network, using its Ethernet port, and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system. The printer's speed is appropriate for a small office, but very much on the slow side.

Ricoh rates the printer at 21 pages per minute (ppm) for both monochrome and color, which should be close to the speed you'll see when printing text with no graphics or photos. However, I clocked it on our tests (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective speed of only 3.4 ppm. In comparison, the Brother HL-4570CDW ($500 street, 3.5 stars) came in at 6.8 ppm when I reviewed it, and even the less expensive 2150cdn managed 5.5 ppm.

Also note that the SP C242DN comes with three printer drivers. Because of the slow speed, I ran the tests with all three to see if the other drivers would do any better. The speed I'm reporting here is for the PCL6 driver, which offers the fastest speed.

Output Quality
The SP C242DN's output quality is pretty much in the same class as its speed?good enough so it's not a problem, but far from impressive. The overall quality is just a touch below par, primarily because of subpar text. Fortunately, par for laser text quality is so high that being a bit below par isn't much of a problem. I wouldn't use the SP C242DN for desktop publishing where high quality is critical, but for anything short of that, you shouldn't have any complaints unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics output is at the same level as the vast majority of color lasers. The quality is certainly good enough for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts and the like. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you may consider it good enough for output going to an important client who you want to impress with a sense of your professionalism. However, it falls a little short of being suitable for marketing materials like one-page mailers or brochures.

Photo quality is at the low end of the very tight range where most color lasers fall, making it close to true photo quality but with some obvious flaws. The quality is easily good enough for printing Web pages with recognizable photos. Depending on your level of perfectionism, once again, you may or may not consider it good enough for, say, a client newsletter.

Running Cost
What makes the SP C242DN interesting is its low cost per page, at a claimed 2 cents for a monochrome page and 10.1 cents for a color page. As a point of reference, the Dell 2150cdn costs less to run that most color lasers in this price range, and its claimed costs are 0.4 cents higher for monochrome pages and 4.2 cents higher for color pages.

Do the math, and you'll get some interesting numbers. If you print just 12,500 monochrome pages over the lifetime of the printer, or 1,190 color pages, you'll make up the $50 difference in initial price between the SP C242DN and Dell 2150cdn. That works out to just 350 mono pages or 33 color pages per month for three years. Print more, and the SP C242DN will cost less than the Dell 2150cdn in the long run. And the more you print, the more it will save.

What this all adds up to is that if you don't expect to print a lot, there's no compelling reason to choose the Ricoh printer. But if you print enough, you can easily save the difference in initial cost compared to a printer that costs less to buy but more to run. For small offices with tight budgets and heavy duty printing needs, this is a pretty compelling argument. Quite simply, the more you print, the more attractive the Ricoh Aficio SP C242DN will be.

Healthy foods missing from stores in low-income black neighborhoods, UGA study finds

Most convenience stores have a wide variety of chips, colorful candies and bottles of sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages. While shoppers can buy calorie-heavy foods wrapped in pretty packages in these locations, what they usually can't find are the fresh produce, whole grains and low-fat dairy products necessary for a healthy diet.

These stores are the only nearby food source for millions of Americans living in what are called food deserts, because they are isolated from affordable healthy food. In recent studies, University of Georgia foods and nutrition researchers uncovered the unequal distribution of food stores in one Southeast community. The first study covered access to stores for people using food stamps, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, while the second study looked at what healthy foods were available at supermarkets, grocery and convenience stores. Both studies found access to healthy food is most problematic in low-income, predominately black neighborhoods.

"Easy access to affordable healthful foods is essential to promoting health and preventing diseases," said Jung Sun Lee, assistant professor in the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences and co-author of a pair of studies examining the food environment on the Florida Panhandle.

"Research examining food environments is a relatively new area in the nutritional sciences," she said. "Understanding the distribution of different kinds of food stores and the kinds and quality of the foods they offer has the potential to provide an explanation of why and how individuals are able or unable to follow dietary recommendations."

The Florida-Georgia connection surfaced when Connie Betterley, a community health promotion coordinator, worked with fellow Leon County Health Department administrators to collect data with a goal of making policy changes and interventions to improve access to healthy food. One of those collaborators was UGA graduate Sohyun Park, who contacted Lee about evaluating the data.

"She knew that UGA graduate students with similar interests in food environments needed data to analyze for their theses and dissertations, so a very nice collaboration developed to complete this project," Betterley said.

The studies examined 48 neighborhoods in Leon County, Fla., whose residents were identified as having high rates of childhood obesity and diet-related deaths. Using Geographic Information System technology and a registry of food stores, the distribution of food stores across neighborhood racial composition, wealth and rurality were examined. Comprehensive food store surveys were used to access the price and availability of healthy foods by food store type, neighborhood income level and racial composition.

Accessibility of SNAP-accepting stores

Results from the first-ever study of food deserts in relation to food assistance benefits accepting stores will be published by UGA researchers in the March issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

"The size and types of stores available may have considerable influence on what people purchase and consume, ultimately influencing their health," said Samantha Rigby, a former UGA graduate student and study co-author. "Access to supermarkets has been shown to promote healthful food choices, and these stores are the most likely type of food store to provide the greatest variety of foods at the lowest prices."

SNAP, formerly the Food Stamps Program, provides food assistance to more than 43 million Americans a month. Florida is home to 2.9 million recipients; 10 percent of the population in the study area relies on assistance for food.

"While they may qualify for financial awards, there are no accessible stores that accept SNAP, or stores with enough variety in foods to fully utilize their benefits," Rigby said.

Primarily black neighborhoods tend to have less access to SNAP-accepting supermarkets than white or mixed race neighborhoods. In fact, no supermarket was available in predominately black neighborhoods in Leon County. SNAP-receiving residents in primarily black neighborhoods in the county may have limited shopping options because the food store type that is most likely to accept benefits, supermarkets, is not present.

"Because this racial group historically has a higher prevalence of chronic disease than whites, lack of SNAP stores nearby and resulting limited food choices may further decrease the quality of their diet and health," Rigby said.

Accessibility of healthy foods

An accompanying study looking at foods available in accessible stores was published in the November 2011 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's publication Preventing Chronic Disease. The study looked at the availability and price of healthful foods by type of store, neighborhood income level and racial composition within a community that has high rates of diet-related illness and death.

"This study suggests that access to supermarkets and more healthful foods varies by neighborhood, which may negatively influence people's eating behavior," said Angela Leone, a former UGA graduate student and co-author of the article.

A sample of 10 fruits and 10 vegetables was examined in the grocery, supermarket and convenience stores sampled. While supermarkets carried all of the products, grocery stores lacked variety in fruits and convenience stores did not carry any vegetables.

"Fruit availability scores were significantly higher in high-income than in low-income neighborhood stores," Leone said.

All supermarkets carried low-fat milk. About 63 percent of grocery stores had low-fat milk while only 36 percent of convenience stores stocked the healthier dairy option. Whole wheat bread was available in supermarkets, but it was much less likely to be found in grocery stores (38 percent) and convenience stores (7 percent). Identical products also cost more in convenience stores.

"For dietetic professionals such as myself, these studies were eye-opening," Leone said. "We often think there is a lack of nutrition education or nutrition knowledge when in fact there may be other barriers that individuals face that inhibit their ability to follow a healthy diet, such as the nutrition environment that they live in and around."

The various concussion-related lawsuits filed in recent months have suddenly taken on a far more serious tone.? According to NBC Chicago, Dave Duerson?s estate has filed a wrongful death action against the NFL.

Duerson committed suicide on February 17, 2011.? The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?

This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.

?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?

?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?

Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? The NFL has argued that relief should be pursued through the collective bargaining process, given that players have been represented by a union, the NFL Players Association.

Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.

Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.

Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.

Physical activity keeps workers mentally fit, says a Tel Aviv University researcher

Obesity can be a dangerous risk to our physical health, but according to a Tel Aviv University researcher, avoiding the gym can also take a toll on our mental health, leading to depression and greater burnout rates at work.

Dr. Sharon Toker of TAU's Recanati Faculty of Management, working with Dr. Michal Biron from the University of Haifa, discovered that employees who found the time to engage in physical activity were less likely to experience a deterioration of their mental health, including symptoms of burnout and depression. The best benefits were achieved among those exercising for four hours per week they were approximately half as likely to experience deterioration in their mental state as those who did no physical activity.

Drs. Toker and Biron say that employers will benefit from encouraging the physical fitness of their employees. If the fight against obesity isn't enough of an incentive, inspiring workers to be physically active lessens high heath costs, reduces absenteeism, and increases productivity in the workplace. Their research was recently published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.

Though depression and burnout are connected, they are not the same entity, says Dr. Toker. Depression is a clinical mood disorder, and burnout is defined by physical, cognitive, and emotional exhaustion. But both contribute towards a "spiral of loss" where the loss of one resource, such as a job, could have a domino effect and lead to the loss of other resources such as one's home, marriage, or sense of self-worth.

Originally designed to examine the relationship between depression and burnout, the study assessed the personal, occupational, and psychological states of 1,632 healthy Israeli workers in both the private and public sectors. Participants completed questionnaires when they came to medical clinics for routine check-ups and had three follow-up appointments over a period of nine years.

Findings indicate that an increase in depression predicts an increase in job burnout over time, and vice versa. But for the first time, the researchers also considered the participants' levels of physical activity, defined as any activity that increases the heart rate and brings on a sweat. The participants were divided into four groups: one that did not engage in physical activity; a second that did 75 to 150 minutes of physical activity a week; a third that did 150 to 240 minutes a week; and a fourth that did more than 240 minutes a week.

Depression and burnout rates were clearly the highest among the group that did not participate in physical activity. The more physical activity that participants engaged in, the less likely they were to experience elevated depression and burnout levels during the next three years. The optimal amount of physical activity was a minimum of 150 minutes per week, where its benefits really started to take effect.

In those who engaged in 240 minutes of physical activity or more, the impact of burnout and depression was almost nonexistent. But even 150 minutes a week will have a highly positive impact, says Dr. Toker, helping people to deal with their workday, improving self-efficacy and self-esteem, and staving off the spiral of loss.

Fighting stress at work

If they're feeling stressed at work, employees can always ask the boss to effect changes, such as providing more opportunities for emotional support in the workplace. But if the organization is unwilling to change, workers can turn to physical activities in their leisure time as an effective stress management tool.

Far-sighted employers can benefit by building a gym on company grounds or subsidizing memberships to gyms in the community, and by allowing for flexible work hours to encourage employees to make physical activity an integral part of their day, suggests Dr. Toker. Such a strategy pays business dividends in the long run.

Physical activity keeps workers mentally fit, says a Tel Aviv University researcher

Obesity can be a dangerous risk to our physical health, but according to a Tel Aviv University researcher, avoiding the gym can also take a toll on our mental health, leading to depression and greater burnout rates at work.

Dr. Sharon Toker of TAU's Recanati Faculty of Management, working with Dr. Michal Biron from the University of Haifa, discovered that employees who found the time to engage in physical activity were less likely to experience a deterioration of their mental health, including symptoms of burnout and depression. The best benefits were achieved among those exercising for four hours per week they were approximately half as likely to experience deterioration in their mental state as those who did no physical activity.

Drs. Toker and Biron say that employers will benefit from encouraging the physical fitness of their employees. If the fight against obesity isn't enough of an incentive, inspiring workers to be physically active lessens high heath costs, reduces absenteeism, and increases productivity in the workplace. Their research was recently published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.
